Main properties of polyester:

 

  • Wear-resistant & UV-resistant: Does not dry out quickly and is less likely to cut or chafe against quays or bollards.

  • No creaking: Unlike cheaper polypropylene (PP), polyester lines are quiet and hardly creak in the swell.

  • Good stretch: Braided polyester stretches to absorb the impact of wave action.

  • Sinking: Polyester absorbs hardly any water but does sink. So make sure the line does not get caught in the propeller.

Factors influencing workload:

  • Knots and splices: A knot (such as a clove hitch) immediately reduces the breaking strength of a line by 30% to 50%. A professionally split eye retains exactly about 90% to 95% . of the original strength. This makes spliced lines significantly safer.

  • Wear and UV radiation: Although polyester is highly resistant to UV and abrasion, the effective working load gradually decreases over the years in the sun and along the quay.

  • Hull shape and windage: A heavy boat with a high superstructure (such as a motor yacht) catches much more wind and requires a thicker line for the same length than a low, light sailboat.
